Meatless Monday

A little over a month ago I decided to “join the Monday Movement” and began to have meatless meals on Mondays. Here is the message this non-profit initiative wishes to share with the world:

One day a week to cut out meat. Our goal is to help reduce meat consumption 15% in order to improve personal health and the health of our planet.

Check out their website here: http://www.meatlessmonday.com/

It’s just one day a week and doesn’t have to be on a Monday (but doesn’t the alliteration just thrill you?)

Venturing into the realm of vegetarianism has actually been quite an eye-opening experience.  I am such a carnivore and to have one day a week to explore different food options, to scan a restaurant menu with a different perspective, and to understand another person’s lifestyle better has been pretty rewarding.  I never would have tried a veggie burger prior to starting this.

This was my menu for this past Monday:

Breakfast: Oatmeal, Scrambled egg whites with arugula, flaxseed, and cilantro, 1 piece of whole grain toast
Snack: Watermelon
Lunch: Vegetarian Masala Burger from Trader Joe’s
Dinner at Me Jana: Grape Leaves, Falafel, Hummus, Lentil Soup

Who knew this carnivore could love Meatless Mondays!  Join me, won’t you?
